As I've mentioned before, my family has a history of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). It's genetic, and on my mother's side. Mom celebrated her one-year transplant anniversary in April, and she's doing very well. Her brother has had two transplants. And then on Mother's Day this year, we got the good news that my Aunt Marietta was getting her transplant. Her local paper had a great story about it (my Aunt is the one on the right).
I, luckily, do not have it, but many of my cousins do, and it's likely some day they, too, will need transplants. For my family, and the thousands of other families out there needing kidney transplants, do one thing for me: agree to be an organ donor when you renew your driver's license. You'll save multiple lives, and you won't be using them anymore anyway :)
