It doesn't exist. Seriously. I've been working all day listening to nothing but Jazz. Coltrane. Miles Davis. Chet Baker. Dave Brubeck. Art Blakey. Stanley Jordan. Jazz is a miracle, if ever there was one.
I didn't get into Jazz until about 10 years ago. I'm a product of a small, western-Kansas town. I came of age in the 80s, which means you either embrace country or hair metal. I chose the latter. And I still listen to Hair Nation on satellite radio religiously.
But Jazz is a whole other dimension of music. A fifth dimension. It's so intense and beautiful and mysterious and sublime and exciting, all at the same time. Jazz is the thinking-man's music. It's improvisation. And timing. And the ability to work with a team.
If you want to understand the way the world really works, listen to Jazz. It's a metaphor for nature. And life.

It's my limited understanding that jazz evolved from a blend of several forms of art from Africa to Louisiana and has influenced many forms since. I'm not sure if it's the best or if that designation is necessary since all art has its place. I do see jazz as representative of the essence of creativity.

Ugh. I like you, Jeff, but I don't like Jazz. It's the exact same sound my head makes when a guy leans in for a kiss goodnight and I had a good time but not a really good time and I don't want to hurt his feelings but I also don't want to have a conversation about not hurting his feelings and I did, after all, order an appeitzer AND a dessert but at the same time I don't think I should feel obligated even though he is kind of cute but I know this isn't going anywhere so it wouldn't be right to kiss him. And I'm drunk.
That's jazz.
To me anyway.

bumping Coltrane Newport '63 in the office right now. And on the flip side, when I discovered Hair Nation this summer, I was very very happy. Probably the best driving music ever made...

I like Coltrane's Blue Train.
That's GREAT Jazz. And that's enough Jazz for my collection.
